St. Lawrence University sophomore Pierson Fowler scored a game-high four goals including three in the fourth quarter, leading the nationally-ranked No. 20 Saints to a 9-5 come-from-behind win at Rensselaer in Troy, NY on Saturday afternoon.

The win ensures that St. Lawrence (12-1, 4-1) will not be the No. 4 seed in the 2012 Liberty League Tournament, but could finish as high as No. 1 or as low as No. 3. Meanwhile, Rensselaer falls to 9-4 (3-3) and will need help to qualify for the conference tournament.

"What a great job by our team to dig deep with our backs against the wall heading into the fourth quarter," said St. Lawrence head coach Mike Mahoney. "It was nice to see that response and it says a lot about the character of this team. Rensselaer always makes opponents play at a high level to earn a win and we were able to do that today."

The Saints closed with a 32-25 edge in shots and a 36-29 lead in ground balls. The Saints also won 13-of-18 face-offs, including an outstanding performance by Jake Davis, who won 10-of-12 draws.

St. Lawrence scored the only two goals of the first quarter thanks to tallies by Tucker Garfield and Fowler, but Rensselaer opened the second stanza with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead. St. Lawrence's Matt Pope evened the game at 3-3 with 3:40 remaining, and tied the game again at 4-4 with only :17 seconds left in the half to send the game to intermission.

Wes Rudy's unassisted goal only 1:18 into the third quarter was the only tally of the stanza, giving RPI a 5-4 lead heading to the fourth. However, Garfield tied the game only 1:52 into the final quarter to set up a dramatic finish.

Fowler would own the remainder of the contest, as he scored back-to-back goals to open up a 7-5 lead, and followed another goal by Pope to ensure the win with only 1:06 left to cap the scoring at 9-5. The midfield unit of Fowler, Pope and Garfield closed with all nine goals in the contest for the Scarlet and Brown, while Dave Hovey and Marc Perroni had assists in the win. Brett Overend led RPI with two goals in the loss.

Junior goalies Jeff Goeke and Jack Nuland combined for eight saves to earn a key win for the Saints, while Alex Castronovo suffered the loss for the home team after making eight stops.

St. Lawrence will be in action again next Saturday, April 28 when the team hosts nationally-ranked RIT on "Senior Day" with a home game in the Liberty League Tournament on the line. Game time is set for 12:00pm at Hall-Leet Stadium.
