Make it a perfect 4-0 for the Clarkson University Lacrosse team to start the 2012 season after the Golden Knights rallied for an 8-7 victory at Geneseo State on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 7-5 after 45 minutes, Clarkson responded with three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, while shutting down Geneseo over the final 15 minutes, to pull out the road win. Freshman Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) and juniors Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH) and Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) scored in the final period. McCabe’s unassisted goal with 24 seconds left in regulation proved to be the game-winner.
McCabe, who also set up three goals, finished with a game-high four points. Classmate Kyle Kasprzyk (Orchard Park, NY) recorded three points on two goals and one assist. Herrington also scored twice. Seniors Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA) and Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ) accounted for the other Clarkson goals.
Both teams posted 24 shots, while Geneseo held a 21-18 advantage in ground balls.
Junior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) made 10 saves for the Knights, including three stops in the fourth quarter to give the Green and Gold the opportunity to win the game. Sophomore Jack Keenan (Brasher Falls, NY) picked up a game-high seven ground balls and won eight faceoffs in the victory.
Seven different players scored goals for the Blue Knights (0-4).
Geneseo led 2-1 after the first quarter and 5-3 at the half.
Clarkson, which is off to its best start since going 5-0 to open the 2002 campaign, continues on the road this coming week, playing at traditional powers Nazareth College and Rochester Institute of Technology.
