Four players on the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team scored in double figures on Saturday against Elmira, including first-year student Kelly Legg's team-high 20 points. Legg's performance anchored the Saints in a 79-66 victory over the Soaring Eagles, who were led by Becca Fretz's 24 points.

St. Lawrence rebounded after its first loss of the season on Friday to Ithaca, improving to 5-1 on the season. Meanwhile, Elmira falls to 2-5.

"It wasn't our best game, but we really did a lot of good things today," said St. Lawrence Head Coach Dan Roiger. "We got 25 more shots than Elmira because we rebounded well on the the offensive end and because we had few turnovers, but we couldn't translate that into points often enough. When we pick up our shooting, we will be even better."

Fretz led all scorers, while teammate Jessica Zoltowski added 23 for the visitors. However, 22 turnovers proved to be too much to overcome for the Soaring Eagles, while St. Lawrence held a sound 49-39 advantage on the boards. Joining Legg in double digit scoring for the home team were juniors Casey Capello (16) and Katie Edgerton (14) and sophomore Erica Spera (11).

The Saints had several chances to take a substantial lead in the first half. However, the play in the low post Fretz and the shooting of Zoltowski kept the Soaring Eagles in the game. The Saints opened up their largest lead of the half at nine points, 36-27, with under two minutes remaining in the stanza when Legg knocked down her second three pointer. However, the Soaring Eagles closed the half with back-to-back lay-ups by Zoltowski and Fretz to pull to within five at intermission, 36-31.

Turnovers proved to be costly in the first half, as Elmira committed 11 to St. Lawrence's five. The Scarlet and Brown also had their way on the offensive glass, hauling in 13 rebounds which led to nine second chance points.

The St. Lawrence defense set the tone in the second half, giving up only 12 points while forcing nine turnovers in the first 10:00 minutes. Capello scored eight points including back-to-back three-pointers to extend the Saints lead to 20, 63-33, with 8:30 remaining in regulation.

Though Elmira pulled to within 11 at 68-57 after a three-pointer by Tesia Kaczynski, they would get no closer as the Saints had efficient offensive possessions down the stretch to solidify the 79-66 victory.

St. Lawrence rookie Katie Abramski had a team-high eight rebounds and chipped in six points. Legg closed 7-of-18 shooting including 3-for-4 from behind the arc and added a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Saints will travel to Weston, MA to take part in the Regis College Tournament on December 11th. They battle Framingham College at 7:00pm.
