Former St. Lawrence University men's hockey player and Canton native Al Bloomer will be presented to the 2013 Walter Yaciuk Award by USA Hockey at its Annual Conference on Wednesday June 5.
The Walter Yaciuk Award is presented by USA Hockey's Coaching Education Program to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the program during many years of service as a volunteer.
Bloomer, who was a standout athlete at Canton High School and is a member of its Hall of Fame, played defense for St. Lawrence, earned all ECAC honors as a senior co-captain. He led the Saints to two ECAC titles and played in the NCAA tournament.
He is USA Hockey Director Emeritus and was National Coach in Chief and Director of USA Hockey's Coaches Section from 2004-2010. He has served USA hockey for over 30 years and is currently a member of USA Hockey's Player Development Committee and is a regional scout for the USA National Team Development Program, living in Montana.
He has coached at numerous National Select Camps and was a member of the coaching staff of USA's Domestic Junior 18 and under Selects, winning a silver medal in 2004 and a bronze in the 2006 Viking Cup.
