Former Saint captain Ray Shero named NHL General Manager of the Year

Former St. Lawrence University hockey captain Ray Shero is the 2013 National Hockey League General Manager of the Year after helping the Pittsburgh Penguins to the NHL's Atlantic Division titles and the number one seed in the Eastern conference playoffs.

Shero, a 1984 graduate of St. Lawrence and among the Saints' top point scorers with 135 in four seasons, was a SLU captain. He spent seven years as a player agent before beginning his NHL management career as an assistant general manager with the Ottawa Senators (1993-98) and the Nashville Predators (1998-06).

He was named general manager of the Penguins in May of 2006 and is in his seventh season as Pittsburgh's GM. He has guided the Penguins to two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009.

He is the son of Fred Shero, who won back-to-back Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975 and served as general manager of the New York Rangers for three years (1978-80). The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their name on the Stanley Cup.

He captained the 1984-85 team for the Saints and was the leading scorer on the 1982-83 and 1983-84 teams, combining for 87 of his 135 points in those two seasons.
