Folmsbee’s walk-off double gives Bears softball split with Oneonta

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Freshman shortstop Grace Folmsbee (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) launched a three-run double to left-centerfield to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh and give the SUNY Potsdam softball team (6-22, 3-11 SUNYAC) a 5-4 victory over SUNY Oneonta (18-12, 10-6) in game one. The Red Dragons opened the day with a 9-1 win in game one. Freshman pitcher Kayla Palmer (Chester, N.Y./Chester) went 4-for-4 on the day and scored twice. Folmsbee went 2-for-4 with the three RBI game two.

In the top of the first of game one, the Red Dragons got on the board when Caroline Koch singled to left field, scoring Dana Del Genio.

In the bottom of the second, the Bears knotted the game at one after freshman catcher Shelby Van Epps (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) singled to left field bringing in sophomore first baseman Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North).

Oneonta took control for the rest of game one, scoring eight runs in the following three innings. The Red Dragons got two from an Amanda Sexton double in the third. The next inning, Koch and Brooke Corbett each singled to center to score two runs and extend the lead to lead to six. Oneonta scored its last two runs off a couple of fielding errors in the fifth to close out the 9-1 win.

Palmer (2-3) received the loss after pitching 4.0 innings and allowing six earned runs on 11 hits. Senior Samantha Hubinsky (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) relieved her for the final inning, and allowed an earned run on two hits. Alyssa Bluethgen (11-5) pitched the complete game for the Red Dragons. She struck out four and allowed one run on four hits.

Palmer went 2-for-2, while Fish and Van Epps each went 1-for-2 with Van Epps tacking on a RBI.

Oneonta also struck first in game two. With two outs and Corbett on third in the top of the second, Kristen Collins beat out a bunt single and Corbett scored on a throw to the plate.

The Red Dragons scored two more runs in the top of the fourth. Corbett scored on a wild pitch. After Collins singled and stole second, Del Genio singled up the middle and scored Collins.

The Bears were threatening to score in the bottom of the third and fourth with the bases loaded, but were unable to capitalize in each inning. Two innings later, Van Epps singled to right center and brought home Palmer.

Oneonta got one more run in the seventh on a wild pitch to give them a 4-1 lead.

Down to their last three outs Hubinsky started off the bottom seventh with a double to left center. One out later, Fish singled up the middle and scored Hubinsky. Senior third baseman Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah Central) was able to reach on an error, with Palmer following up with a single through the middle. Potsdam had the bases loaded with two outs for Folmsbee. The shortstop drove the ball deep to left center, clearing the bases and giving the Bears a 5-4 victory in walk-off fashion.

Fish pitched 6.1 innings, struck out two, and allowed one earned run on eight hits. Junior Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) (2-4) got the win after pitching the last 0.2 innings and striking out one without giving up a hit. Julia Calabro pitched the whole game, struck out four and allowed four earned runs on 11 hits.

Palmer went 2-for-2 and scored twice, while Hubinsky went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Folmsbee went 2-for-4 and had three RBI.

Potsdam returns to action tomorrow as they host SUNY New Paltz in a doubleheader starting at 9:30 a.m.
