Five Roos earn Empire 8 All-Conference accolades

Rochester, NY – Brandon Welch (Constable, NY), Wilson Matos (Brooklyn, NY), Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico) Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, WI) and Chris Jones (Deerfield Beach, FL) all earned spots on the Empire 8 All-Conference teams.

Welch was named Second Team All-Conference after having a monster sophomore season for the Roos hitting .326 with 56 total bases, 45 hits, 17 runs, 11 doubles and 22 RBI. He recorded a .406 slugging percentage and .376 on-base percentage in 138 at-bats. The catcher was also a force behind the plate recording a team-best 203 putouts to go with 44 assists while committing just 6 errors (.976 fielding percentage).

Welch rarely had base runners steal on him due to his arm strength and gunned down 18 runners on the season. He had a hit in 28 different games and 13 multi-hit outings. The Constable native had a remarkable Empire 8 Tournament with nine hits and 8 RBI in four contests.

Matos, an Honorable Mention All-Conference recipient, has been a clear leader of the Roos baseball team in his rookie season. The freshman has hit .339 in 127 at-bats leading the team with 29 runs. He has posted 43 hits, 8 doubles, 2 triples a home run and 16 RBI from the lead-off position while recording a .427 on-base percentage. In the field he has manned the middle infield with 44 put outs and 75 assists at shortstop.

Matos has a hit in 26 different contests and 9 multi-hit contests. Matos has recorded three or more hits on four different occasions. He was named the ECAC Upstate Rookie of the Week on March 17th and was also honored as a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Honorable Mention All-American.

Nazario-Cruz, who earned Honorable Mention All-Conference accolades, has been a consistent offense threat all season for the Roos batting .326 in 135 at-bats with 44 hits, 8 doubles, a triple and a team-best 20 stolen bases to go with 18 RBI. The sophomore has also been exceptional in the outfield where he has a .988 fielding percentage with 79 putouts and 3 assists with just a single error. He also second on the team with a .435 on-base percentage.

He has at least one hit in 28 games and 13 multi-hit games. Nazario-Cruz was named the USCAA Player of the Week on March 17th.

Douglas, who got the nod on the Honorable Mention All-Conference Team, has had an impressive sophomore season hitting .367 in 139 at-bats. He leads the5661 team with 76 total bases, 51 hits, 3 home runs, 2 triples, 12 doubles and 32 RBI. Douglas has also been effective on the base paths with 9 stolen bases and has a .547 slugging percentage and .44 on-base percentage. He is equally effective in the field with 150 put outs and 12 assists compared to just 4 errors (.976 fielding percentage).

He has a hit in 32 different games, 12 multi-hit contests and 6 games with three or more hits. Douglas was twice named the Empire 8 Player of the Week and was also named to the Empire 8 All-Tournament Team.

Jones, who earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors, finished his senior season with 24 total bases, 22 hits, 14 runs, two doubles and 10 RBI in 88 at-bats. He was also a force defensively primarily playing first base as he recorded 119 put outs and 37 assists for a .945 fielding percentage. The Deerfield Beach, FL native also drew 14 walks leading to a .365 on-base percentage. He had a hit in 16 different outings including going a perfect 5-for-4 with two runs and 3 RBI in a game on April 23rd against Utica College.

Brandon Welch was named SUNY Canton's recipient of the Sportsman of the Year award. One member of each team was named that institution's representative on the 2015 Baseball Sportsman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission.
