POTSDAM, N.Y.—Five members of the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team have been named to the ECAC Women’s West All-Academic team for the 2011-2012 season. Senior Caitlin Manahan, juniors Nadine Cunningham and Katie Komsa, and sophomores Brittany Lucky and Dawna Salvarinas each represent the Bears on the team. Manahan, Cunningham and Komsa have earned the honor two years in a row.

To be named to the team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic year, have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, and have competed in at least one-half of their team’s contests during the current season. A goaltender must have played at least 33 percent of her team's minutes.

Manahan scored eight goals and recorded 11 assists for 19 points, while playing in all 25 games for Potsdam this season. In her two seasons with the Bears, Manahan registered 18 goals and 21 assists for 39 points in 50 games.

Cunningham gave Potsdam valuable minutes on offense and defense in 22 games this season, while recording an assist. She has suited up for the Bears in 64 games over three seasons, totaling three goals and five assists for eight points.

Komsa, played in all 25 games for Potsdam in 2011-12, scoring three goals and assisting on three others for six points. In 71 career games with the Bears, the forward has nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points.

Lucky had a career year for Potsdam on the blue line. The defenseman had six goals, including three on the power play, and 13 assists for 19 points. She has played in all 50 of the Bears’ contests in her two seasons, scoring nine goals and recording 19 assists for 28 points.

Salvarinas had another strong campaign in goal for Potsdam, posting a 4-5-1 record, a .903 save percentage and 3.09 goals-against average. She also recorded her first career shutout against Chatham on Feb. 11. In two seasons, Salvarinas is 7-12-1 with a 3.71 g.a.a. and .899 save percentage.

2011-12 was a record-breaking season for the Bears (12-10-3, 7-8-3 ECAC West). They finished with a school record 12 wins and seven conference victories after surging to a 10-4-2 mark over their last 16 games. Potsdam reached the playoffs for the second time in program history and recorded a stunning 2-1 quarterfinal upset over No. 7 Elmira. The Bears then stayed even with RIT, the eventual national champion, for two periods before succumbing to the Tigers in the third period of the ECAC West Semifinals.
