Fink and Bench scoring lifts SUNY Canton women’s basketball past Bard, 56-37

Canton, NY – Allison Fink (Saranac, NY) came off the bench to score 13 points and added nine rebounds as the SUNY Canton women's basketball team earned a 56-37 victory against visiting Bard College on Sunday afternoon in the Roos House.

The Roos (1-6) bench outscored the Raptors (0-6) reserves, 24-0 in the contest. The win is the first career victory for first year Head Coach Jade Perry.

Visiting Bard jumped out to an 8-7 lead after the opening quarter but the Roos outscored the Raptors 11-7 in the second period. The opening half featured seven ties and six lead changes as Canton took an 18-15 lead into intermission.

Both teams struggled shooting 23 percent in the opening half. Fink led the Roos with nine points and eight rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench. Alexis Akingbade paced the Raptors with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

SUNY Canton outscored Bard 38-22 in the second half including a 25-11 margin in the fourth quarter. Leading 31-28 early in the fourth the Roos went on a 14-3 run that included a pair of three-pointers from Taylor Saltus (Clintonville, NY) and two buckets inside from Tatiana Laroche (Elmont, NY) that gave Canton control of the game and the 56-37 victory.

Saltus led the Roos with 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Fink finished with 13 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench. Tylar Barbato (Hillside, NY) added a season-high seven points, while Randi Conway (Mount Upton, NY) and Laroche combined for 17 rebounds.

Akingbade paced the Raptors with 15 points and 16 rebounds, although Canton limited her to just four points and five rebounds after halftime. Sarah Morris added 10 points and eight rebounds for Bard.

SUNY Canton shot 40 percent from the field in the second half, compared to just 29 percent for the Raptors. The Roos also held a 52-44 edge on the glass as both teams pulled down 16 offensive boards. Canton held the upper hand in fast break points (10-2) and received a huge lift from its bench outscoring the Raptor reserves, 24-0.

The women's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Thursday when it hosts St. Lawrence University at 7 p.m.
