Fifth-ranked Saints women's hockey cap regular season with 3-0 win

Brooke Webster scored a goal and added two assists, and Grace Harrison made 26 saves to improve on her own school record with her eighth shutout of the season to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-0 win over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Class of 1965 Rink in Hamilton, N.Y.

The fifth-ranked Saints, who had already sewn up the No. 2 seed in the ECAC Hockey tournament, will host No. 7 Yale next weekend in the tournament's quarterfinal round. Colgate, the sixth seed, will face No. 3 Cornell on the road.

"We were able to capitalize on some opportunities tonight," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "The players really dug deep to battle and make the plays necessary to get the win. It was a good way to finish the season and move into the playoffs."

As it has for the entire regular season, the Saints' top forward line set the tone early in the game. At the mid-way point of the first period, Hannah Miller started a breakout from her own blue line and hit Kennedy Marchment with a cross-ice pass through the neutral zone to create a 2-on-1 for Marchment and Webster. Marchment passed across to Webster on the left side, and Webster moved in goal, brought the puck across the mouth of the net and, after avoiding a poke check attempt by Colgate goaltender Julia Vandyk, put away her 20th goal of the season.

Halfway through the second period, Maggie McLaughlin gave the Saints a 2-0 lead with a power play goal from Webster and Marchment. Webster hit Marchment with a pass to the left faceoff circle, and Marchment found McLaughlin for a one-timer in the slot that beat Vandyk high glove side for McLaughlin's third goal of the year.

With the assist on the goal, Webster joined Marchment in the 50-point club this season. The last time the Saints had two players with 50 or more points in a season was the 2003-04 campaign, when Gina Kingsbury '04 had 57 points and Rebecca Russell '05 recorded 54.

Less than seven minutes into the third period, Justine Reyes gave St. Lawrence a three-goal cushion with the Saints' second power play goal of the day. Reyes created a turnover in the defensive end and sped down the ice, finding Webster to create another 2-on-1. Webster returned the pass to Reyes, who was streaking down the left side and went backhand-forehand high on the glove side for her 11th goal of the year.

Harrison's 26-save performance was the second-highest she has recorded in a shutout this season. She made a key save early in the third period, as Breanne Wilson-Bennett had a breakaway just after a St. Lawrence penalty expired, but Harrison made the stop with her right leg pad to preserve the shutout. Moments later, Reyes to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.

Special teams turned out to be a huge factor in the game, as St. Lawrence was 2-for-3 on the power play against the nation's best penalty kill unit and killed all four Colgate power plays.

St. Lawrence finished the regular season 24-4-4 overall, 16-3-3 in ECAC Hockey, five points behind Clarkson in the ECAC Hockey standings. The 35 points are tied for the second highest point total in program history, trailing only the 2007-08 team, which finished 18-3-1 for 37 points in league play.

The Saints' ECAC Hockey best-of-three quarterfinal series against Yale will begin next Friday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. Saturday's game will be played at 3 p.m., and Sunday's game, if necessary, will be at 3 p.m.
