GENESEO, N.Y.—Junior midfielder Jorge Ferrer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) scored in the 59th minute to give the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (6-9, 2-6) a 1-0 win at SUNY Geneseo (7-6-2, 3-4-1) on Friday afternoon. Sophomore goalie Jakeb Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) made a career-high 10 saves for his ninth career victory and third shutout.
The Blue Knights controlled the play in the first half, but Mitchell kept Potsdam even. Mitchell made four saves in the opening 45 minutes. Despite good pressure for the entire period, the contest remained scoreless at the break.
Geneseo kept the Bears on the defensive in the second half, but Potsdam executed on its best opportunity of the day. At 58:42, junior midfielder Tyler Mullery (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) moved the ball up the left side of the field before it was knocked away from him. It rolled right to Ferrer who send a rocket into the back of the net from 20 yards out. The Blue Knights answered with more pressure, but Mitchell made four more saves, including one at the buzzer, to close out the win.
Geneseo goalie Dillon Medd made just one save on the afternoon.
The Bears finish up SUNYAC play tomorrow when they head to Brockport for a 1 p.m. contest.
