Fast Start leads Saints women’s lacrosse past Allegheny College

Abigail Owens scored four goals including two goals in the first five goals of the game all scored by the St. Lawrence University Women's Lacrosse team as the Saints opened up an early lead and finished the annual Spring Training trip with a 12-6 victory over Allegheny College Wednesday night at GT Bray Park in Bradenton, Florida.

Owens scored the first goal of the game for the Saints (3-3) before Alexandra LaMotte and Owens scored goals in a span of 19 seconds to give St. Lawrence a 3-0 lead 15 minutes into the game.

Kayla Schmalz and Ashley Norris added goals to push the St. Lawrence lead to 5-0 before Allegheny finally stopped the early momentum with a goal at the 8:22 mark of the opening period.

Kara Hurley scored with 2:16 left in the first half to cap the scoring for the half and send the Saints into the intermission with a 6-1 edge.

In the second half, Owens scored her third goal of the game in the first three minutes of action extending the lead to 7-1.

The Gators scored a pair of goals to trim the lead to 7-3 but Kiera Taussig, Owens and Schmalz scored consecutive goals as the Saints took a 10-7 advantage.

With 7:22 left in the second half, Allegheny started a streak of three straight goals to cut the St. Lawrence lead to 10-6 with 5:25 left to play but Taussig and LaMotte scored the final two goals of the game to close out the scoring with the final score of 12-6.

Owens led the Saints with her five points on four goals and one assist while Taussig, Schmalz and LaMotte had two goals each and Hayden Stein also had a pair of points with two assists.

Hurley and Norris added single goals and Olivia Slade had an assist for the Saints. Olga Lukas played the entire game in the St. Lawrence goal and was credited with six saves.

St. Lawrence returns home from Florida and will play its home opener Saturday against SUNY Geneseo.
