ONEONTA, N.Y.—A big inning in each game of today's SUNYAC doubleheader was enough to power SUNY Oneonta (14-6, 3-1) to a sweep of the SUNY Potsdam women's softball team (3-16, 0-8) on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons broke open game one late for a 9-1 win and jumped out early for a 14-0 win in game two.

In the opener, Oneonta took a 2-0 lead in the bottom first on back-to-back RBI singles from designated player Traci Lichtenstein and shortstop Marlene Cuevas. Bears freshman pitcher Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia), making her first collegiate start, settled in over the next three innings and held the Red Dragons in check. Potsdam sophomore shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) cut the lead in half with an RBI double that scored pinch runner Rachel Grefke (Livonia, Mich./Clarenceville) in the top of the third. The score remained the same until the Red Dragons broke out for seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth.

Dougherty (1-1) allowed eight earned runs on 14 hits, while walking one and striking out one. Freshman pitcher Jaime Hoskins (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) pitched a third of an inning. Sabrina DeAngelis (8-3) went the distance for Oneonta, allowing a run on six scattered hits and striking out seven. Ott finished the game 2-for-3.

The Red Dragons scored all 14 of their runs in the second inning of game two, with nine RBI's coming on five extra-base hits. Sophomore second baseman Alexis Lerman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) went 2-for-2 for Potsdam, while Ott and senior center fielder Kayla Taylor (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) also had singles.

Hoskins (1-8) was roughed up in 1.1 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits. Junior pitcher Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) allowed four earned runs on five hits and four walks over the next 1.2 innings. Dougherty closed out the game allowing just one hit in her inning of work.

Rachel Hitt (5-3) earned the victory with three scoreless innings pitched. She allowed two hits, while striking out two and walking one. Julia Simpson pitched two hitless innings and recorded two K's and a walk.

The Bears return to Maxcy Softball Field on Tuesday with the hopes of finally getting in their home opener against Plattsburgh. The Cardinals come to town for a pair of games at 3 and 5 p.m.
