Castleton, VT – Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) scored his third goal of the season but the SUNY Canton men's soccer team dropped a 5-1 decision to Castleton on the road on Saturday evening.
The Spartans (10-5-1) got on the board first in the 15th minute when Paul Phillips played a long through ball to Jake Tietgens who finished for the early Castleton lead. Tietgens added his second goal of the game 2:23 later off a pass from Thomas Kirk.
Andrew Meister gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead at the 36:18 mark off the setup from Glenn Devine. The Roos (4-11-0) were generating plenty of their own scoring opportunities and they finally broke through early in the 43rd minute.
Tyler Cook (Antwerp, NY) took the corner kick and found the head of Escalante who redirected the ball home for his third goal of the season to get the Roos within two. Just more than a minute later Castleton's Seth Wilmott found the back of the net to give the Spartans a 4-1 lead heading to intermission.
The Spartans added a goal in the 69th minute for the 5-1 final. Mouhammed Thiam (New York, NY) made two saves in goal for the Roos, while Patrick Anunziatta (Schenectady, NY) turned aside one shot over the final 17:24. Dan Palker and Aaron Parker made three saves each for Castleton.
The men's soccer team returns to the pitch on Tuesday when it visits Utica College at 6 p.m.
