Canton, NY – Josh Erickson made 30 saves and the SUNY Canton men's hockey team scored two goals each in the second and third periods to earn a 4-1 win against Plattsburgh State on Saturday evening in the Roos House.

After a back-and-forth first period the Cardinals (6-8-0) struck first with 31 seconds remaining as Philip Middleton touched a pass to Noah Batis in the defensive zone. He played the puck up the near side to Gavin Yates who left a drop off pass for Batis near the right circle as he lifted the puck past the glove of Roo goaltender Josh Erickson. The Cardinals held a 10-6 shots advantage after one.

The Roos (4-9-2) gained significant momentum with two goals in a 27 second span near the end of the middle period. Vili-Jesper Koivula redirected a David Hopfer shot from the point for his team-leading eighth goal of the season at 17:33. Just seconds later Joey Vocino hit Kyle Matsumoto with a quick pass from left to right in the slot as he buried his second goal of the season. Shots were even at 12 apiece as the Roos took a 2-1 lead after one.

At 12:28 of the third period Plattsburgh was whistled for a tripping penalty and Head Coach Alex Boak called a timeout to set up the power play. Just 22 seconds into the skater advantage Tyler Bullard circled at the point near the blue line and carried the puck to the right circle hitting Koivula in the slot. His initial shot was saved by Brady Rouleau but Vocino put home the rebound at the far post for the crucial insurance goal.

The Cardinals were whistled for a slashing penalty with 3:22 remaining and following their penalty kill pulled Rouleau with 1:14 remaining. Trenton Yule slotted an empty-netter with 10 seconds remaining for the 4-1 final.

Erickson had another big game in net as he improved to 2-0-1 on the season making 30 saves, while Rouleau turned aside 21 shots for Plattsburgh.

The men's hockey team will host Morrisville State College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Roos House.
