Canton, NY – Thomas Crabtree (Knoxville, TN) scored his first goal of the season and Josh Sova (Oswego, NY) netted his team-leading ninth goal to lead the SUNY Canton men's hockey team to a 2-2 overtime tie against visiting SUNY Potsdam on Friday evening in the Roos House.

Freshman Josh Erickson (Woodbury, MN) had an impressive game in net stopping 31 of the 33 shots he faced.

The Bears (9-5-3) opened the scoring 13:06 into the first period when Tommy Telesca lit the lamp for the third time of the season off passes from Joey Gilhooly and Brad Campagna.

Potsdam appeared to take a two goal lead in the middle period but the goal was waved off due to high-sticking. The teams combined for just one power play each through two periods as the Bears continued to hang onto the one goal lead.

Roos (3-12-3) goaltender Erickson was huge through two periods of play making 21 saves on 21 shots, while the Roos also held a 27-14 edge in the faceoff circle.

Just 50 seconds into the final period Thomas Crabtree (Knoxville, TN) knotted the game at 1-1 when he scored his first goal of the season off passes from Brett Costello (Lombardy, ON) and George Curry (Schaumburg, IL).

The Bears regained the lead at 11:01 when Mike Sweeney scored off a scrum out in front. Dylan Vander Esch and Logan Brown were credited with helpers on the play. SUNY Canton was quick to respond just 1:08 later when they converted off an offensive faceoff win. Sova scored his team-leading ninth of the season when Eric Witzel (Ottawa, ON) hit him with a pass in the slot as he went top shelf. Kyle Matsumoto (Walnut, CA) also assisted the goal.

Just over a minute later Matsumoto one-timed a slap shot that went off the cross bar and sailed high into the netting. The teams were tied at two after 60 minutes of play as they skated to overtime.

With just under a minute remaining in the overtime Sova and Nick Lepone (Richmondhill, ON) skated 2-on-1 into the offensive zone. Sova deked and put a backhanded shot on net but Nate Skidmore made the save. With 25 seconds left in the extra session Gabe Flood (Onalaska, WI) sprawled out diving to stop a slap shot from Kyle Thacker in the slot to preserve the win.

Erickson made 31 saves for the Roos, while Skidmore turned aside 24 shots for Potsdam.

These two teams will have a rematch on Saturday night when the Roos travel up Route 11 to take on the Bears at 7 p.m.
