Engineers end Clarkson softball hopes of Conference tournament

Potsdam, NY - Sunday afternoon Rensselaer showed both sides of its team with an impressive pitching display and an offensive onslaught in two games against the Clarkson University Softball team, as the Engineers came away with a doubleheader sweep of the Golden Knights 2-0 and 10-2 at Scott Field on the final day of the Liberty League regular season.

The Golden Knights ended the regular-season campaign with a record of 18-13 overall and 3-9 in the Liberty League, while Rensselaer solidified its place in the conference standings, ending in second place with a 8-4 league mark and a 19-13 record overall.

In the opener, Rensselaer scored in the first inning when Danielle Balestrini led off the game with a double to left and moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt. Taylor Ten Eyck then singled to right for the first run of the contest. The Engineers scored again in the third when Balestrini walked, stole second, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Stephanie Caudle then drove a fly ball to right field for the sacrifice fly. Clarkson couldn't get much going offensively against Kristina Weltzin with just one baserunner in the first six frames, and that came as a hit by pitch in the third for Lindsey Walsh. The Knights finally broke up the no-hitter in the seventh when Raeanna Dunn singled to right. Dunn moved to third on an infield single by Jamie Bridge and then Bridge took second to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Weltzin struck out the final two hitters of the game to end the threat and preserve her shutout.

Weltzin finished with seven strikeouts and just two hits with no walks in the seven inning victory, while Bridge allowed only three hits in seven innings, striking out three with two walks. Only one of her runs was earned.

The second game was more of an offensive display for the Engineers as they hammered four home runs in just five innings. Caudle hit a two-run blast to left in the first for a 2-0 lead and Morgan Ten Eyck drove in two more with a single in the opening frame. Clarkson responded with a run in the bottom half of the first. Dunn and Bridge each singled, and Chelsea Elliott blooped a single to right. The rightfielder attempted to get Bridge at second base when she had to hold up to make sure the ball wasn't caught, but the throw got away and allowed Dunn to finish her trip around the bases. In the second inning Rensselaer got the run back right away when Lillian Kolehmainen homered to lead off the frame, and Ten Eyck hit a two-run homer in the third to give Rensselaer a 7-1 edge. A silent fourth was a brief reprieve for the Knights, but the Engineers would get three more in the fifth, highlighted by a deep two-run shot from Caudle to right field that cleared the scoreboard. Clarkson tried to extend the game with a rally in the bottom half of the fifth with doubles from Dunn and Bridge, but the Knights could get just a single run in the frame.

Caudle finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four driven in and Morgan Ten Eyck was 2-for-3 with four RBI. Jena Servidone also was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. In the circle, Caudle went five innings and allowed six hits and a walk, but struck out nine. The top four hitters in the Clarkson lineup did all of the offensive damage, going 6-for-12, with both Dunn and Bridge recording a pair of hits.
