POTSDAM, N.Y.—Rensselaer (4-1) rallied from an early deficit to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women’s lacrosse team (3-4) 13-10 in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon. Engineer seniors Afton Marshall (Windham, N.H./Salem) and Jen Greenwood (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) each had three goals and three assists. Junior Maribeth Simmons (Clinton, Conn.) scored three goals to lead the Bears and juniors Whitney Boshart (Calcium, N.Y./Indian River) and Carly Richards (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) each contributed two goals and an assist.

Potsdam got off to a strong start, grabbing a 2-0 lead on goals from Simmons and Boshart at 24:51 and 22:12. After Rensselaer tied the game at two, Boshart struck again on a free position at 17:45 to put the Bears back in front. Marshall evened the game at 16:16 and Potsdam grabbed its last lead of the contest at 14:52 as Boshart set up Simmons’ second goal. The Engineer offense ignited for the next five goals with Marshall netting the last two for an 8-4 lead. Richards set up junior Sierra Langkammerer (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) at the 1:08 mark and the Bears trailed 8-5 at the half.

Potsdam hung tough in the second half, matching Rensselaer goal for goal, but couldn’t gain any ground. The Bears got to within 9-7 on a great individual effort from Richards at 24:12, but didn’t get any closer. Simmons and senior Kathleen Frear (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) scored the final goals of the game for Potsdam at 3:03 and 00:19, but the Engineers came away with the 13-10 victory.

Junior goalie Kaci Milligan (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) made eight saves for the Bears and sophomore Allie Arnal (Lakewood, N.Y./Phillips Exeter Academy) stopped seven shots for Rensselaer.

With her three-point day, Richards moves into a tie with former teammate Molly Lehman-Lewis ’10 for second place on Potsdam’s all-time scoring list. Richards now has 157 points (110 goals-47 assists) to match Lehman-Lewis (115-42-157). Richards trails all-time leading scorer Alisha Schaad ’08 (139-24-163) by just six points.

Bears Head Coach Lauren Bruce recognized the skills of her opponents and hopes Potsdam can use the game as a learning experience.

"RPI's attack is very fast and they did a good job of keeping our defenders busy,” said Bruce. “We had to make adjustments defensively at the half. (R.P.I.) had a very smart offense and it was faster than we've seen recently. They exposed some of our defensive weaknesses, so hopefully we can learn from that for the next game."

The Bears host Morrisville at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30. Potsdam downed the Mustangs 19-7 in Morrisville last April.
