Eight Saints earn Liberty League weekly honors

The Liberty League announced its weekly award winners on Monday, and eight St. Lawrence University student-athletes were honored for their athletic accomplishments.

St. Lawrence swept the cross country Performer of the Week honors, as Scott Smolensky and Ariel Beccia were recognized for their victories at the 2013 Cardinal Classic. Smolensky led a Saints' sweep on the men's side in 15:40, while Beccia finished in 18:18, pacing her team to the title as well.

A pair of rookie defenders was recognized for their play on the gridiron against Coast Guard, as Jayson Leigh and James Holley-Grisham earned the football Defensive Performer and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively. Leigh made two interceptions in the 21-17 victory and returned one of the picks for a touchdown on Coast Guard's first offensive play of the game.

Holley-Grisham made a game-high 16 tackles including 10 solo stops against the Bears. The Rochester, NY native also delivered when it mattered most, stopping the Bears' Blake Thompson on 3rd-and-2 with the game on the line in the final minutes. That tackle gave the ball back to St. Lawrence, which scored six plays later to steal the victory.

Senior Julia Friesen was named the Liberty League's Offensive Performer of the Week for women's soccer, as she led the nationally-ranked No. 21 Saints to a weekend sweep of Plattsburgh and Oswego. The Offensive MVP of the Cardinal Classic, Friesen scored both game-winning goals and assisted on another, as the Saints topped both the Cardinals and Lakers by the score of 2-1 to extend their winning streak to start the year to four games.

The women's tennis Performer of the Week honor went to junior Elkie Vandenbeemt, who had a solid weekend at the Mary Hosking Invitational. She finished with a 5-1 record and won the A Doubles flight. She and her partner never lost more than three games en route to the doubles title, while Vandenbeemt also advanced to the A singles championship match as well.

Finally, Aaron Costello and Morgan Smith were honored by the Liberty League as the men's soccer team delivered two clutch performances in sweeping No. 12 Rochester and SUNY Geneseo. Costello was the Defensive Performer of the Week after totaling seven saves in the two wins, while Smith was named Rookie of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal against the Yellowjackets and assisting on both goals in a 2-1 win over the Knights.

Both the Saints' men's and women's soccer teams will be in action at Sandy MacAllaster Field this weekend, with the women playing Nazareth and Elmira and the men taking on SUNY Brockport. The men's tennis team will host its annual Fall Classic on Saturday and Sunday, while the field hockey team squares off with Geneseo at North Country Field on Saturday. Football (at Norwich), volleyball (Oswego Tournament) and men's and women's golf will all compete on the road.
