Utica, NY – The SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team was unable to overcome an early deficit dropping a 16-3 road contest to host Utica College on Saturday afternoon.
Zack Stevenson scored twice for the Pioneers (6-2) to give the hosts a 2-0 lead after one quarter. Utica would strike six times in the second stanza to take a commanding 8-0 lead into intermission. Corey Spuck (Rochester, NY) stopped 12 shots in the opening 30 minutes for the Roos (0-6).
SUNY Canton got on the board 23 seconds into the fourth quarter on Ryan Cardiff's (Albany, NY) ninth goal of the season. He would add his second of the game two minutes later and Chris Gamble (Carthage, NY) netted his 10th of the season for the 16-3 final.
Spuck finished with 18 saves in goal for SUNY Canton, while Andrew Fiske (Winthrop, NY) replaced him making two stops in the final period. Andrew DiOrio, Kobi Johnson and Parker Smith all saw action between the pipes for Utica.
Devin Gruneisen (Potsdam, NY) posted a game-high six ground balls, while Taylor Mustizer (Adams, NY) tallied a team-high three caused turnovers. Gruneisen and Tony Carden (Franklin, MA) each earned four wins in the faceoff circle.
The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts SUNY Potsdam at 7:00 p.m.
