Early goal from Kroetz gives Knights 1-0 win over SUNY Canton

Potsdam, NY – A mistake in the opening minutes provided a window of opportunity for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team and that was all that the Golden Knights would need as they held on for a 1-0 non-league win over SUNY Canton on Tuesday night at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-3-0 on the season and they will begin conference play this weekend against Ithaca College. SUNY Canton fell to 3-4-1 on the campaign.

Fans were just getting settled in after the national anthem when the Golden Knights got on the scoreboard less than four minutes into the contest. The Golden Knights' Kevin Calnan took the ball deep into the corner before getting surrounded by three SUNY Canton players and having the ball cleared out. The ball easily found John Furcick about 35 yards out and he carried the ball in about eight yards before lofting a pass over top the SUNY Canton defense, which was pushing up. However, the Roos momentum was coming forward while the play was going back and Brian Kroetz found an opening, collected the pass for one-one-one with SUNY Canton goalkeeper Mouhammed Thiam. With plenty of time and space to work, Kroetz calmly hit a medium paced groundball to the opposite corner to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead at the 3:26 mark in the first period.

Following that lapse, the offense kind of shut down for both teams as legitimate scoring opportunities were few and far between. Few shots actually found their way to the goalies as most were way too high to provide any danger. In the second half, SUNY Canton did have a near miss in the early going with a shot that just cleared the cross bar, but that proved to be the Roos only real chance. Clarkson had a few scoring chances in the latter half of the second period, but those shots or chances always were just a little off, either getting blocked, cleared or simply running out of space with which to work.

Junior Riley McDonald finished with one save for the shutout for the Knights, while Thiam made two stops for SUNY Canton. Clarkson held small advantages in both shots (9-6) and corner kicks (5-2).
