Brockport, NY – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team fell behind early on the road as host College at Brockport earned a 4-1 win on Saturday evening.
Jeremy De Fazio and Zach Sikich made the Roos pay for penalties netting a pair of power play goals in the first 4:24 of the game. The hosts led 2-0 after the first. After a majority of the second period was played scoreless Brockport added a late goal from Chad Cummings to open up a three goal advantage after the second period.
J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, NJ) netted his second tally of the season 5:50 into the third to get SUNY Canton within two goals. Joe Casale (Niagara Falls, NY) and Brandon McMartin (Toronto, ON) were credited with assists on the play.
With 2:11 remaining and trailing by two scores Head Coach Trevor Gilligan pulled Spencer Landry (New Hartford, NY) in favor of the extra skater. Josh Sova (Oswego, NY) won a pair of faceoffs and Casale added another as the Roos were able to generate multiple opportunities. Lafferty produced a shot on goal, while Brett Costello (Lombardy, ON) missed wide.
With 1:21 remaining Brockport scored on an empty netter for the 4-1 final. Despite the loss SUNY Canton held a 32-25 edge in shots on goal. Landry made 21 saves for the Roos, while Aaron Green turned aside 31 shots.
The men's hockey team is back in action on Friday when they visit SUNY Potsdam at 7:00 p.m. in Maxcy Ice Arena.
