Sophomore Katie Frederick recorded her 10th double-double of the season, but the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team fell to Union, 55-53, in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon in Schenectady, New York.

Frederick, who shot 5-for-13 from the floor and 6-for-7 from the line, led the Saints with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Marlee Gunn scored a season-high 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Annabelle Pugliese added nine points, five rebounds and a team-high four assists.

Union opened the game with a 14-6 lead over the Saints after ten minutes of play.

The Saints rallied in the second, taking their first lead of the game with a layup from Chelsea Van Tassel. The Saints and the Dutchwomen battled through two more ties and remained tied 22-22 at halftime. The Scarlet and Brown outscored the Dutchwomen 16-8 in the second.

Battling through two more ties and three lead changes in the third quarter, the Saints held a 38-36 lead with 10 minutes left to play.

A jumper from Laura Vinton put the Dutchwomen up by four early in the fourth quarter and Union maintained a marginal lead through the remainder of the final frame. Gunn went 2-for-2 from the line with 53 seconds left to play, closing the gap to two, but the clock ran out before the Saints could complete their comeback effort.

"Great effort today by the Saints," said head coach Dan Roiger. "It's tough to take a two point loss, but I loved the fight we exhibited all game. We missed five layups in the first quarter, we needed one to tie and two to win."

Nicole Conley led Union with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Elly Vaughan and Sophie Borg each scored 12 points. Conley also posted a team-high five blocks and four steals.

St. Lawrence fell to 6-8 on the season and 3-4 in Liberty League play, while the Dutchwomen improved to 9-3 and 4-2.

The Saints will hit the road again next weekend, facing off against RIT and William Smith on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
