Drewiske scores both as Saints, Bobcats tie 2-2

Junior center Jacob Drewiske scored his second goal of the game on a power play 8:12 into the third period and St. Lawrence University's penalty killers killed off a five-on-three that spanned the end of the third period and start of overtime as St. Lawrence and Quinnipiac skated to a 2-2 ECAC Hockey tie at Appleton Arena Saturday night.

St. Lawrence finally snapped a six-game ECAC losing streak with the tie, improving to 7-13-5 on the season and 3-9-1 in league play, while Quinnipiac gained three points on its North Country weekend, and is 13-10-4 overall and 6-6-3 after its win at Clarkson Friday and Saturday's tie

"It was a good point to get," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "We dodged a bullet there at the end with the penalties, but did a great job on the kill. We would have liked to have gained more than a point out of a home weekend, but we played well in both games and we have to keep building on that."

The Bobcats jumped out to a lead before the crowd had a chance to settle in as junior wing Scott Zurevinski tipped a shot from the point by senior defenseman Zach Hansen and the puck trickled through the pads of Saint goalie Robby Moss and into the net with just 39 seconds gone in the game. Quinnipiac outshot the Saints 10-4 through the first 16 minutes of the game, but SLU started to come on late in the first period and dominated the second

The Saints outshot Quinnipiac 16-3 in the middle period, but had to settle for a 1-1 tie after two as Bobcat goalie Eric Hartzell made 15 of his 33 saves in the period. Drewiske tied the game at the 7:15 mark as Hartzell tried to play the puck behind the net, but lost it in his skates. Saint captain Jared Keller took the puck away from the goalie and fed Drewiske who came down the slot and beat Hartzell to the right post for his fourth of the season.

Quinnipiac took a 2-1 lead at 3:21 of the third period on a five-on-three power play as Connor Jones scored his seventh of the season from the center slot along the ice, but the Saints came back with a power play goal of their own as defenseman George Hughes found Drewiske alone in the slot and Drewiske backhanded his second of the night past Hartzell at 8:12 to make it a 2-2 game

It stayed that way despite plenty of opportunities for both teams to take the lead. The Bobcats went on a power play with 1:16 to go and went up two men with 43 seconds left in the third, but the Saints were able to kill off the entire two man advantage to preserve the tie.

"Robby Moss did a good job with some saves in key situations and we blocked a lot of shots today," Marsh said. "I thought we played a really outstanding second period and probably should have come out with more than one goal. The third period and overtime were a lot of end to end action."
