Patrick Doherty had a goal and two assists and freshman goalie Kyle Hayton came through with another big night in goal as St. Lawrence University picked up its first win at Cornell's Lynah Rink since February of 2007 with a 4-2 victory over the Big Red Saturday night.

SLU improves to 7-4-1 overall and 3-1-0 in league play with its split of its weekend road series. The Saints took six of eight points on their first four league road games of the season and ended a 0-6-1 streak in Ithaca. Cornell falls to 1-4-1 overall and 1-3-0 in league play.

"It is rare to come out of here with a win, and we knew we were going to have to grind one out," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "To be 3-1 after four road games is quite an achievement and I am really proud of the way we have played."

The Saints dominated play five-on-five in the first period, but had some problems on special teams. Cornell scored the game's first goal on a power play when Cole Bardreau was left all alone in front when a Saint defender lost his stick. Bardreau put the puck past Hayton's outstretched pad at 11:11 for a 1-0 lead.

The Saints came back to tie it when Gunnar Hughes scored his fourth of the season 2:30 later. The goal came of a faceoff win by Pat Doherty with Mitch Eden relaying the puck to Hughes. Hughes' shot was headed wide, but hit a Cornell player in the leg and deflected past Big Red goalie Mitch Gillam to tie it at 1-1.

Hayton kept it a 1-1 game with three saves on breakaways, two of them shorthanded and the Saint penalty kill stepped it up in the second period, killing off four Cornell man-up chances, allowing just three shots on goal in those four penalty kills. He finished with 21 saves, his lowest total of the season, but had a number of big one-on-one stops among those saves.

"We were a little loose again to start on Saturday night, but picked up our game as we went along. Matt Purmal and Chris Martin did a great job, particularly with us on the penalty kill as much as we were. They really battled and competed hard in what was a very physical game and one with a lot of emotion because of the number of penalties called," said Carvel. "It was a full team effort...all four lines contributed, special teams played a big role and we had excellent goaltending again."

Gluchowski gave the Saints the lead with 32 seconds to play in the second period as he rifled a shot from the center point that beat Gillam cleanly after a faceoff win by the Saints in the Cornell zone. Alexander Dahl and Sean McGovern assisted on the go-ahead goal, the second of the year by Gluchowski.

Doherty gave the Saints a two-goal led just 1:20 into the third period when he caught up to a loose puck on a Cornell power play and scored a shorthanded goal on a shot from the top of the faceoff circle that beat Gillam to the upper corner. It went to 4-2 at 5:09 when Woody Hudson picked up a rebound of a shot by Doherty and put it back past Gillam on a power play with Eric Sweetman also assisting.

Matt Buckles scored a power play goal with 12:09 to play as he picked up his own rebound and put it back past Hayton, but the Saint goalie prevented further scoring and the Saints skated away with the win.

A scrum at the final horn resulted in 25 penalties called with five disqualifications, two to Gunnar Hughes and one to Chris Martin for the Saints. The officials called 39 penalties for 205 minutes, the bulk of them coming at the 20 minute mark of the third period.
