Canton, NY – Sophomore Kristina DiNardo (Ottawa, ON) scored her fourth goal of the season to lead the SUNY Canton women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory on Saturday against visiting Alfred University.

The visitors had the first good scoring opportunity five minutes in off a free kick from3 0 yards. Alyssa Garbarino blasted a shot that Kelsi Gilbert (Colton, NY) made a fingertip save on to knock off the crossbar. She was able to recover and save the shot before it crossed the goal line.

The Roos got on the board first in the 17th minute when Hannah Christiansen (Lake View, NY) played a through ball up the middle to Kristina DiNardo (Ottawa, ON). Saxon goalkeeper Sammy Jo Shanahan came charging out of the box as DiNardo played a touch to the left and fired a shot into the open goal for an early 1-0 lead.

The Saxons nearly tied the game off their first corner kick of the game with nine minutes left in the opening half. Lauren Wyant took the corner from the far left side playing a beautiful ball into the box. Keturah Gordon connected with a header just wide of the far post.

SUNY Canton nearly went up two with six minutes remaining. Christiansen blasted a shot from right to left as Shanahan made the save. Aliza Armstrong (Heuvelton, NY) had a great chance for her second goal in as many games but she was unable to collect the rebound at the far post. The Roos took a 1-0 lead into intermission.

With 26 minutes remaining in regulation Lexi Flint played a cross right to left to Wyant who was wide open in the middle of the box. Wyant's shot went just wide of the left post keeping the Roos on top.

The hosts continued to push looking to add an insurance marker. DiNardo placed a beautiful ball to Armstrong on her left whose shot went wide left. With 10 minutes remaining DiNardo once again played a tremendous ball to Armstrong on the left, but Shanahan made a point blank save to keep Alfred within one.

The Saxons brought everyone forward including their goalie with a corner kick with one minute remaining. Shanahan got her head on the ball in the box but the shot was blocked and cleared away from danger.

Gilbert made six stops in net for the Roos, while Shanahan turned aside 10 shots for the Saxons.
