Morrisville, NY – Joe Deveny (Stoufville, ON) scored a pair of goals and Vili-Jesper Koivula (Pinsiö, Finland) added a goal and assist as the SUNY Canton men's hockey team scored five straight goals in a 5-3 win at Morrisville State on Saturday.

Morrisville (2-9-2) opened the scoring just over two minutes in when Nick DeVito won an offensive zone faceoff back to Chris Pearson at the point. He found DeVito at the near post who lifted a quick shot over the stick of Austin Washkurak (Oakville, ON) for the early lead.

The Roos (2-8-2) evened the score when Ben Beasley (Burlington, ON) hit Josh Sova (Oswego, NY) with a pass who fed the puck up the near boards to Koivula. Koivula's initial shot was saved by CJ Sharp but Koivula put home the rebound over the blocker glove side.

Canton took its first lead of the game at the 16:27 mark when Koivula picked off a pass from a Mustang defender on a failed clearance. He found Deveny who skated into the slot ripping a shot over the stick side. The Roos took a 2-1 lead into first intermission holding a slight 14-12 advantage in shots.

A defensive zone clearance came right to Kyle Matsumoto (Walnut, CA) at the top of the right circle. He hit Thomas Crabtree (Knoxville, TN) in the low slot as he deked the goalie and flipped a shot over the glove of Sharp for the 3-1 lead.

The Roos extended the lead to three at 10:17 of the middle period on the power play. Joey Vocino (Pickering, ON) took a shot that was blocked as he was falling at the right circle. The puck redirected to Deveny waiting at the far post who put home his second of the night.

SUNY Canton added its fifth unanswered goal five minutes later. After a two-on-two battle along the boards the puck drifted out to David Hopfer (Tonawanda, NY) at the point along the far boards. He swung a pass to J.P. Langlois (Amos, QC) at left point who slotted a shot inside the right post for the 5-1 lead. The Roos took a 5-1 lead after 40 minutes as Washkurak made 25 saves to keep Canton in control.

The Mustangs added a pair of third period goals from the sticks of DeVito and Layne Martin for the 5-3 final. Washkurak made 28 saves in his first collegiate win, while Sharp (16), Jared Young (6) and Sal Stalteri (11) combined to stop 33 shots for the Mustangs.

The Roos went 2-for-7 on the power play while the Canton penalty kill unit went a perfect 5-for-5.

The men's hockey team is off until December 30th when it faces Manhattanville College at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the Middlebury College Invitational.
