St. Lawrence University senior co-captain Mel Desrochers scored the game-winning goal and added assists on two insurance goals, as the Saints skated past Princeton University at Hobey Baker Rink by the score of 4-1.

The win moves St. Lawrence to 6-7-1 (5-2-1), and completed a three-point weekend in the ECAC Hockey standings including the tie with No. 5 Quinnipiac. The loss sends Princeton to 5-4-1 (4-4-0) after being outshot 31-28.

"We played our best hockey of the weekend in the final two periods of the game. Princeton controlled the first with great work ethic, but we scored a timely power play goal to take a 2-1 lead. We worked very hard the last two periods and are very excited to come home with a three-point weekend."

Sophomore Abbey McRae gave St. Lawrence an early 1-0 lead only 1:29 into regulation, with assists going to rookies Brooke Webster and Alex Moore. The Tigers would tie the score midway through the first on a goal by Cassidy Tucker, but Desrochers put the Saints back on top before the end of the stanza. Her power play goal at 18:16 was assisted by Moore and Rylee Smith.

Junior goaltender Carmen MacDonald would shut down Princeton throughout the final two periods, keeping the Saints' lead intact. Desrochers would get the primary assist on both Kayla Raniwsky's goal at 18:51 of the second and Webster's tally at 17:08 in the third which put the game out of reach at 4-1. Dom Korakianitis and Smith also assisted on the insurance goals.

MacDonald's 27 saves matched the effort of Princeton goaltender Kimberly Newell. Penalties proved costly for the Tigers, as St. Lawrence was 2-for-7 on its power play tries. The Saints killed both of Princeton's power plays.

St. Lawrence will have a quick turnaround this week as they finish off the 2013 calendar year with a pair of non-conference games against nationally-ranked Mercyhurst on Tuesday and Wednesday in Erie, PA. The Saints and Lakers will meet at 7:00pm on Tuesday night in the opener.
