POTSDAM, N.Y.—Needing a win to clinch a playoff spot, the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (12-3-1, 5-2-1 SUNYAC) jumped on Buffalo State (4-10-2, 3-5) with three first half goals and went on to a 4-0 victory. Sophomore forward Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) scored two goals senior midfielder Ryle Murray (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) had a goal and two assists for four points. Senior forward Amber Hyatt (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) added one goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Gabby Hobika (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) needed just two saves for her 11th career win and fifth career shutout.
The victory ties the Bears single-season record for overall (12) and conference wins (5) and guarantees them a home playoff game. When they'll play, who they'll play and what place they finish will be determined tomorrow. With SUNY Cortland's 2-1 win over SUNY Geneseo, the Red Dragons remained tied for second place with Potsdam.
The Bears pressured the Bengals defense from the outset and it paid off at 17:05 of the first half. Buffalo State junior goalie Emma Krenzer (Scottsville, N.Y./Aquinas) sent a short goal kick about 25 yards out from the net right on to the foot of Dean. Dean stepped around a defender and sent it back much quicker in to the left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead. Potsdam continued to pin the Bengals in their own end and struck twice in a 26-second span in the final minute of the half. At 44:23, Murray set up Dean to double the score and then at 44:49, Murray buried her own marker. Potsdam took the 3-0 lead into the break.
Just over five minutes into second half, the Bears all but put the game away. Murray fed Hyatt and she fired a shot off Krenzer's hands and into the net for a 4-0 advantage. Potsdam's defense allowed just three shots in the half and only one found its way to Hobika.
Krenzer stopped six shots on the afternoon. The Bears outshot the Bengals 19-6 and had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
With so much accomplished already, Potsdam battles for playoff positioning when the Bears host SUNY Fredonia tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
