Sophomore center Matt Lindblad snapped a 1-1 tie with his first goal of the season at 13:54 of the second period, helping Dartmouth College to a 3-1 ECAC Hockey victory over St. Lawrence University at Appleton Arena Friday night.
Lindblad's goal, which came off a goal mouth feed by freshman wing Eric Neiley snapped a three-game St. Lawrence ECAC win streak and brought the Big Green,
now 4-3-0 overall and 3-2-0 in league play into a tie in the league standings with the Saints, 3-6-0, 3-2-0.
"Dartmouth played a very solid game defensively and blocked a ton of shots," said Saint associate head coach Mike Hurlbut. "Our effort was very good, but we had a couple of chances that we were unable to finish off early in the game and they came back to haunt us."
Senior goaltender Jody O'Neill made 20 saves for the win in his first start of the year and Dartmouth defenders blocked 11 Saint shots in addition to holding them to just 21 shots on goal for the game. Matt Weninger made 25 saves for the Saints.
Dartmouth opened the scoring just 1:07 into the game as senior forward Nick Walsh tucked his second goal of the season under Weninger's pads on a power play. Walsh took a pass from freshman center Jesse Beamish and moved in tight before scoring as the Saints were hurt by a penalty incurred just 14 seconds into play.
SLU came back to tie the game at 4:30 of the second period, scoring their first league power play goal of the season as sophomore Kyle Essery took a pass from defenseman Pete Child and beat O'Neill from a tough angle.
Dartmouth, which outshot the Saints 8-5 in the third period, added an insurance goal when Tyler Sikura took Connor Goggin's clearing pass, got a step on a Saint defender and walked in on Weninger, tucking his fourth goal of the season just under the crossbar at 8:27. The Saints pulled Weninger for an extra attacker with 2:27 to go, but could not get any closer.
"Dartmouth played very well with the lead in the third period. They won some key faceoffs and did a good job of disrupting us offensively," Hurlbut added.
