CU Women's Soccer dominates in 8-1 victory

Four goals in each half from the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team helped the Golden Knights to dominate visiting Johnson State 8-1 on Saturday afternoon on Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson is now 3-0-0 so far this season while Johnson State falls to 0-5-0.

Clarkson dominated the early stretches of the game, but initially could not open the scoring. It was leading scorer Lauren Flynn who finally got Clarkson onto the scoreboard. Flynn found herself in a one-on-one situation with the Johnson State goalkeeper after a nice pass from Summer Gillespie. Flynn was able to slot her shot into the lower corner for her fifth goal of the season.

The score remained 1-0 until the 42nd minute, when Gillespie scored off a pass from Mia Fiacchi. Megan Murphy and Danielle Martin then scored in quick succession to give the Green and Gold a 4-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the action continued to be in Clarkson's offensive half. Brianna Weber grabbed the first goal of the second half when she scored off a Camryn Careccia cross. Weber then got an assist when Courtney Black hit a powerful shot from the top of the box that was too much for the goalkeeper. Giulia Mahoney and Emily Hallee each added goals, the first of their collegiate careers.

Johnson State was able to get one goal back with less than two minutes left in the game to make the final score 8-1.

Clarkson took 40 shots to Johnson State's two. Clarkson also took all five of the game's corner kicks. Elyse Green played the first half in goal with Nicole Zlotnick taking over for the final 45 minutes. Kaila Lemmer had 10 saves for Johnson State.

Clarkson will next host Green Mountain College in a 12:00 noon game on Sunday.
