Williamstown, MA – A stretch of close to 10 minutes with only two points did in the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team as the Golden Knights suffered their second loss of 2016-17, falling 66-49 to Williams College on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights (4-2) will take on top-ranked Tufts University at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.

Williams entered the game allowing opponents to make just 29.6% of their shots, but Clarkson appeared ready to make that statistic obsolete with a strong effort in the first quarter. The Golden Knights shot 46.7% in the opening 10 minutes (7-for-15) with 17 points thanks to a solid effort all around. With the two teams tied at 9-9 with just under three minutes to go, junior Devin Sorell buried a 3-pointer and was fouled on the play, finishing off a rare four-point play to give Clarkson a 13-9 edge. The Knights would hold that four-point advantage at the first break, but any momentum dissipated with the brief intermission. Clarkson shot only 2-for-12 in the second quarter, both 3-pointers from Sorell that gave the Knights a 23-21 lead with 4:59 remaining. However, that was the last that Clarkson would lead, or even score in the half as Williams ended the quarter on an 8-0 run. Fortunately for the Knights, the Ephs went scoreless for the final 2:50 of the quarter as well, making it 29-23 at the half.

Clarkson got on the board in the third quarter with a jumper from Sorell at 8:04, but again that was its only points for close to five minutes. Between the end of the second quarter and the beginning of the third, the Knights suffered through a stretch of 9:40 with just two points, allowing Williams to gain a double-digit advantage at the end of the third quarter. Although the Knights trailed by 12 through three and were still within striking distance, the Ephs shot 8-for-13 in the final quarter to pull away for a 17-point win.

Sorell finished with 15 points while classmate Madison Shea added 11 points and five rebounds. Senior Stephanie Grobe contributed nine points, six rebounds and four steals. After their hot first quarter, the Knights shot just 12-for-41 (29.3%) for the remainder of the game.

Williams finished the game shooting 22-for-46 (47.8%) from the floor, burying 11 3-pointers in 22 attempts. Devon Caveney scored 15 points to lead the Ephs, but it was Kristin Fechtelkotter who had the best overall game with 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Emily Chang came off the bench to score 13 points, while Lexi Jones also had 10 points, going 4-for-6 from the floor.
