Houghton, NY – After a slow start offensively, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team picked up the pace on both offense and defense as the Golden Knights halted a three-game losing streak with a with a 64-51 victory against Houghton College on Saturday.
The Golden Knights improved to 5-4 on the season and will now take a three-week break before jumping into the Liberty League schedule in early January.
Clarkson shot just 5-for-16 for 13 points in the first quarter, but kept things close despite Houghton's Elle Reed burying three 3-pointers in the opening 10 minutes. It took less than five minutes in the second quarter for the Knights to match that output as the team started getting to the basket with easy layups and mid-range jumpers. Houghton scored the first points of the quarter, but Clarkson went on a 13-0 run to take the lead for good.
The third quarter went the Knights way even more than the second did, as Clarkson went on a 16-4 burst in the third to truly change the face of the match up. Cori Beck hit a 3-pointer at the 7:40 mark to pull Houghton within three (34-31), but that was the last time that the Highlanders would make a field goal attempt for the next eight minutes. By then, Clarkson led by double figures thanks to consistent scoring from several players. It wasn't until the late in the fourth quarter that the Highlanders would cut into the margin to make it single digits, and Madison Shea was able to bury all four of her free throw attempts in the final 65 seconds to clinch the win.
Clarkson shot 23-for-48 (47.9%) from the floor after the first quarter, including a 56.4% from inside the 3-point line. Junior guard Madison Shea scored a team-high 16 points and also added five assists and four steals, while Devin Sorell contributed 12 points and four assists. Each of Clarkson's other three starters, Kathleen Coloney, Stephanie Grobe, and Molly Stewart, tossed in eight points apiece. For Houghton, Hannah Manwaring scored 12 points and also found her teammates for three assists. Elle Reed added nine points, but all of those were scored in the first quarter and the Knights were able to hold her 10 points under her season's average entering the game. Cori Beck produced a solid all-around game for the Highlanders with nine points, eight rebounds and six assists.
