Elmira, NY - Sophomore Devin Sorell and junior Stephanie Grobe combined for 36 points as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team edged past Elmira College, 67-55, in a non-league contest Tuesday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-1 on the season and will head to Massachusetts to play a pair of NESCAC teams in the Williams Tournament this weekend. Elmira fell to 1-4.

The Soaring Eagles scored the first points of the game, but after a 3-pointer from Sorell at the 8:57 mark of the first period the Golden Knights never trailed again. That came in large part due to a 10-0 run in the course of just two minutes. Though Elmira would cut the margin back to three by the end of the quarter, Clarkson utilzied a 10-0 run in 90 seconds in the second quarter to push its lead to a game-high 14 points (31-17), with six points in the stretch coming from Grobe. Once again, however, the Soaring Eagles wouldn't go away and kept the game close with just four points separating the two teams at the half.

Elmira cut the margin to just one (37-36) at the beginning of the third quarter, but Clarkson had an answer to every push from the Soaring Eagles. Up by eight through three quarters, the Golden Knights quickly pushed their lead to 10 points in the fourth and the margin never shrunk below nine for the rest of the contest.

Sorell finished with a team-high 19 points and also chipped in three assists, while Grobe tossed in 17 points and added six rebounds. Ashley Loggins recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds and also added a season-high seven steals, pushing her conference leading total to 29. Madison Shea was the fourth Clarkson player to finish in double figures with 12 points. For Elmira, Danielle Cleary scored 29 points on 9-for-21 shooting (8-for-9 from the free throw line) and also had 10 rebounds and four steals, though she also committed nine turnovers.
