Rochester, NY – A 25-5 run crossing the third and fourth quarters allowed the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to turn a small deficit into a double-digit lead as the Golden Knights claimed a Liberty League home playoff berth with a 63-51 victory over RIT on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights improved to 19-4 overall and 12-2 in the Liberty League with their 14th straight victory. Clarkson and RIT were tied atop the conference standings entering the game, but the Tigers fell to 18-5 and 11-3. Since Clarkson won the season series 2-0, the Knights need just one more win to clinch the top seed in the Liberty League tournament.
Clarkson scored the first basket of the game, but quickly fell behind as RIT responded with eight straight points. The Tigers finished the period with a 17-9 lead, but the second quarter saw the teams to back and forth with small runs. A Maria Edwards 3-pointer with 2:26 remaining gave the Tigers a 27-20 lead, but Clarkson ended the half with a 5-0 run to pull back within two points.
Sophomore Madison Shea buried a 3-pointer at the 7:38 mark of the third quarter to give Clarkson its first lead since the opening basket, but the advantage was short-lived as RIT ripped off seven straight points. That quick run was the last gasp for the Tigers though, as Clarkson finished the period on a 15-2 run, including 11 straight points in the final 3:30. With a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, Clarkson had the momentum in its favor and the Knights continued their 25-5 run, capped off by a layup by Devin Sorell with six minutes to go. The Tigers pulled back within seven in the final three minutes, but Sorell hit a 3-pointer with 1:50 to go and the Knights closed out the game with the necessary free throws.
Ashley Loggins collected another double-double and was impressive overall with 18 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Devin Sorell added 17 points and Stephanie Grobe contributed 15 points and three steals, going 7-for-8 from the free throw line. For RIT, Tara Lynch shot 6-for-12 from the field to score a team-high 14 points. Maria Edwards and Jessica Glaz each added 11 points for the Tigers.
