A dramatic comeback gave the eighth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team a 4-2 win over Princeton on Saturday afternoon.
Clarkson is now 8-3-1 overall and 4-0-0 in the ECAC while Princeton is 3-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference.
"I thought we came out and played well to start the first period, but lost a little momentum after their first goal," stated Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "The players did a good job regrouping between periods and came out much better in the second getting a couple goals back to even the game up. We kept the pressure on in the third and capitalized on a some chances to skate away with the win. Getting four league points on the road against two top ten teams is a big step forward and something we can surely build upon moving forward."
Princeton was the aggressor early on. The Tigers bounced out to a 2-0 lead with goals 8:47 and 12:23 into the first period. However, after the thirty minute mark the tide turned in favor of Clarkson.
At 10:31 in the second period, Loren Gabel scored off a pass Savannah Harmon with Cayley Mercer also getting an assist. Just a minute and a half later, the Green and Gold were level when Michael Pejzlova scored.
In the third period, it was all Clarkson. Just 1:07 into the final frame, Kelly Mariani grabbed the game-winning goal. Mariani's goal came on a Clarkson extra-man opportunity with Genevieve Bannon and Rhyen McGill getting the assists. With just six seconds left in the game, Gabel added an empty net goal for good measure.
Clarkson finished with a 32-26 advantage in shots. Clarkson was two of six on the power-play while the Tigers nailed one of their three extra man opportunities. Shea Tiley finished with 24 saves while Alysia DaSilva made 28 stops for Princeton.
Clarkson will return home for games against Union and Rensselaer next weekend.
