Potsdam, NY – It wasn’t quite the way that the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team wanted to extend its unbeaten streak, but the Golden Knights certainly could not come away displeased by their 2-2 tie against the fourth-ranked Boston University Terriers in front of 187 fans Friday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights moved to 3-1-3 overall on the season, with a 3-0-2 mark in their last five games. Boston University saw its winning streak end at three games, sliding to 4-1-1 overall. Clarkson will take on the University of New Hampshire at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

The Terriers began the game a little flat, but shortly after the first whistle, five minutes into the game, Boston University picked up its play. It was just a few moments following that first whistle that the Terriers got on the scoreboard with what almost appeared to be a broken play. Jenn Wakefield skated in but lost her footing, all the while tossing a shot on to the Clarkson goal. Golden Knights netminder Erika Howe (Ottawa, ONT) stopped the initial shot, but a hard rebound bounced back into the slot where Taylor Holze picked up the puck and flipped it into the top of the net at the 5:33 mark. Though the Terriers didn’t pick up another goal in the rest of the period, they put a significant amount of shots on goal during their lone power play. By the close of the first period, Boston University held a 12-7 edge in shots, with most of them solid scoring opportunities.

The second period was a different story from the first drop of the puck as Clarkson controlled play, especially in the first 12 minutes, out shooting the Terriers 11-1 in that time frame. Thanks to a 5-on-3 power play, the Golden Knights were able to knot the score up as well, with a goal less than four minutes into the second frame. Both Carly Warren and Jenn Wakefield were called for checking, and with just 18 seconds left in the two-player advantage, Clarkson scored on a shot from sophomore Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) just outside the crease. Both Danielle Skirrow (Trenton, ONT) and Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) earned the assists.

The Knights finished the second period with a 14-6 edge in shots, but the play evened up in the third period with both teams gaining some solid opportunities. However, it was a fortuitous ricochet that would put Clarkson on top at the 8:30 mark in the third stanza. The deflection by senior Gabrielle Kosziwka (Limehouse, ONT) in front of the Boston net allowed the Knights gain their first lead of the contest, with assists coming from classmates Kali Gillanders (Kyle, SASK) and Danielle Boudreau (Whitby, ONT).

With time winding down in the period and Clarkson looking ready to claim the win, the Terriers were able to tie the score up 2-2. Plenty of traffic in front might have been enough to provide a screen, but a slap shot from freshman Kayla Tutino, which looked like it was stopped by the Clarkson goalkeeper, snuck under Erika Howe’s arm and into the net with 5:21 remaining in the game.

In the five-minute overtime, Clarkson carried play in the Boston University defensive end for most of the period, enjoying a 4-0 edge in shots, but the Knights were unable to break the tie. Howe finished with 24 saves and Kerrin Sperry of Boston University made 32 saves. Clarkson went 1-for-4 on the power play and the Terriers were scoreless in their two extra-skater chances.
