Alfred, NY – Wednesday's games proved why there is a reset after seven innings as the Clarkson University Softball team split against Alfred, enjoying a solid effort in a 5-1 win against the Saxons in the opener but suffering a 10-2 loss in the nightcap.

Clarkson moved to 10-8 on the season and will face fifth-ranked St. John Fisher on Thursday. Alfred saw its record go to 8-6 in 2017.

After a quiet first where both teams were three up, three down, Michele Winn put Clarkson up quickly in the top of the second as she led off the frame with her sixth career home run. Clarkson tacked on four more in the top of the third with a little more manufacturing used. Bridget Woolley led off the third with a single and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt in which Danielle Whitham also reached due to an error. After the Saxons recorded their first out of the inning, Raeanna Dunn then walked to load the bases and Jamie Bridge followed with an RBI single. With the bases still loaded, Alfred picked up one more out, but the damage wasn't done in the third as Ali Schwenzfeier doubled home all three baserunners to push the score to 5-0.

Alfred finally did get on the scoreboard in the fourth with a Haley Powers two-out home run., but that was the only time that the Saxons threatened, as their other three hits were scattered in other innings and in no frame did Alfred put two runners on.

Jamie Bridge gained the win, striking out six against no walks while allowing only four hits in seven innings of work. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate and stole a base. Winn picked up her Liberty League leading sixth homer of the year, and Schwenzfeier was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in, which ranks third in the conference.

Game two was not as kind to the Golden Knights as Alfred found enough offense and took advantage of Clarkson miscues to gain a 10-2 win in six innings, scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early. Alfred scored one in the top of the first when Dominique D'Andrea reached on an error and then came around on a single Haley Powers. The Saxons then put things out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the second and four more in the bottom of the third. Hannah Lawrence doubled home a run in the second and Liz Thompson tripled her home before scoring herself on a wild pitch. Thompson also delivered a three-run double in the third.

Clarkson pushed one run across in both the fifth and the sixth innings to cut into the Alfred lead. Raeanna Dunn singled home Krystin Messier in the fifth and Erika Jensen drove in the second run for Clarkson, pushing Danielle Whitham across with a single in the sixth. However, Alfred would halt any hopes of a comeback in the bottom half of the sixth. Thompson reached on a one-out double and came around on a double from pinch-hitter Elena Ceja. Ceja then scored with two outs thanks to a single from Sophia Chiavatti for the 10-2 final.

In game two, only Jensen enjoyed a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3. Katie Pelton took the loss for the Knights pitching 2.1 innings. Both Leah Allen and Maggie Stark recorded five outs in the circle for the Knights as well.
