With its eighth shutout of the season, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team knocked off rival St. Lawrence 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Clarkson finishes its season with a 7-7-2 overall record and a 3-4-1 Liberty League mark. St. Lawrence falls to 11-4-0 overall with a 4-4-0 record in conference. It is the first time Clarkson has defeated St. Lawrence since 1993 and is also the first time the Green and Gold will finish at least .500 since 2001.
Although it will not go down on the scoresheet as scored by a Clarkson player, the only goal of the game came as the result of pressure from the Golden Knights. As Clarkson went on a breakaway towards St. Lawrence's goal, a Saints player slid in to prevent a scoring chance, but only was able to knock the ball into his own goal.
With their conference playoff hopes on the line, the Saints poured forward to tie the game and send the game to overtime. St. Lawrence racked up seven shots in the final 30 minutes of play, but goalkeeper Michael King and the Clarkson defense held strong and made sure the own goal stood up as the winner.
St. Lawrence finished with a 24-7 edge in shots and a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks. Michael King made 10 saves in his eighth shutout of the season. That is the most for a Clarkson goalkeeper since Kip Ladd had eight in 1993 and trails only Vele Galovski's 10 in 1980 for most all-time. King also finishes his career fourth all-time at Clarkson with 15 career clean sheets. Mike Smith had two stops in a losing effort for St. Lawrence.
