Schenectady, NY - Large runs in each half of Saturday afternoon's game against Wesleyan University doomed the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team as the Golden Knights couldn't combat the hot shooting of the Cardinals in a 76-49 defeat in the opener of the Sig Makofski Classic at Union College.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-5 overall and will face Westfield State at 2:00 pm on Sunday afternoon. Wesleyan improved to 3-1.

Clarkson was able to keep up with the Cardinals in the early going and held a two-point lead with eight minute expired in the first half after a Drew Zlogar 3-pointer put the Knights up 20-18. Wesleyan tied the game up less than a minute later, beginning a 15-0 run that saw Clarkson go cold from the field, shooting 0-for-10 with two turnovers. Though a steal and a lay in by Felix Abongo stopped that rush, Wesleyan packed on seven more points to take an 18-point lead (40-22). The Cardinals ended the half with 46 points, going 21-for-28 from the floor in the first 20 minutes.

Wesleyan couldn't keep up its torrid scoring pace in the second half, but Clarkson also wasn't able to chip away at the lead much. The Knights pulled to within 14 points at the 15:24 mark of the second half on a Conrad Zampier 3-pointer. That was as close as the Knights would get as Wesleyan immediately went on an 11-0 run and finished off its streak with a 22-4 edge to take a 75-43 lead.

Zapier finished with a team-best 12 points, going 4-for-7 from the field with three makes from beyond the 3-point arc. Sophomore Tom Nuttle also buried three 3-pointers for nine points while Drew Zlogar and Derek Hart each kicked in eight points. Freshman Cormac Bettinger added six rebounds, a block and a steal in 11 minutes off the bench.

Several Wesleyan players shot well from the floor, led by Rashid Epps, who went 7-for-8 for 16 points, and Joseph Kuo, who went 6-for-8 with 14 points. Both players also had three blocks. BJ Davis shot 5-for-6 from the field and had 11 points to go along with six assists, and Joe Edmonds added 12 points.
