CU men's hoops defeat versus Morrisville

Potsdam, NY – All hot streaks must come to an end, and the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team's dominance from the 3-point line came screeching to a halt on Saturday in the Golden Knights' 77-58 loss to Morrisville State at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-4 on the season with the defeat and have the next three-plus weeks off until they begin league play on January 3rd. Morrisville improved to 6-2 on the young season.

Nothing appeared off for Clarkson in the early going as both Michael Hayduk and Drew Zlogar banged home 3-pointers in the first four minutes, but after that the offense turned mostly to Derek Hart, who enjoyed a strong first half, shooting 7-for-9 from the floor. In comparison to Morrisville State's Kenny Bonaparte, however, Hart's first-half was pedestrian. The sophomore guard carried the Mustangs in the early going, scoring 22 of the team's first 24 points in the opening 10 and a half minutes. After Bonaparte departed for the bench a minute later, Morrisville began to get a few points from other sources, but when he returned with under four minutes to go, the Mustangs ended the first period with an 8-2 run for a 36-30 lead at the break.

Hart had 14 points in the first half to lead Clarkson while Zlogar scored nine and grabbed five rebounds. Unfortunately, after a 2-for-5 start from the 3-point line, Clarkson missed its next 11 3-pointers in the half. For the Mustangs, Bonaparte finished the half with 24 points while Kevin Dennis chipped in six.

As much as it tried, Clarkson couldn't get things going at the start of the second. The Knights turned the ball over 11 times in the second half, providing Morrisville fast break points off five steals in the first four minutes and the first 11 points of the second half. Clarkson got back to within 13 points on one occasion, but more misses from the perimeter and consistent offense from the Mustangs allowed the margin to swell to as many as 25 before it finally settled at a 19-point differential.

The Knights finished the game shooting just 7.7% from the 3-point line (2-for-26, after shooting 75-for-161, or 46.6%, from the arc over the last six games combined) and received the majority of their points from a pair of seniors. Zlogar finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds while Hart concluded with 19 points and three blocks. The rest of the team scored 13 points, six of which came in the last three minutes of the game. For Morrisville, Bonaparte tossed in a game-high 29 while Kevin Dennis had 17 points and nine rebounds. Trent Ward recovered from a slow start to finish with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals.
