Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Camryn Careccia scored a goal in each half as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team ended its modest two-game winless streak with a 2-0 victory over Utica College on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-2-2 on the season and will begin conference play next weekend at Ithaca College. The Pioneers fell to 2-4-1 with their second loss of the weekend.

Both teams began the game with solid scoring chances thanks to passes from just outside the penalty area, but each was either corralled by the goalie or cleared easily by a defender. After that, it took some time for either team to get much going on offense, but the Knights broke through with a goal midway through the first half. Senior Madison Kather gained control about 30 yards out and carried the ball past a couple of Utica defenders before being encountered by the Pioneers' goalkeeper Allison Wagner. With Wagner out of position, Kather sent a cross over to Camryn Careccia, who was able to finish off the play despite a little pressure at the 23:33 mark.

Clarkson ended the first half with a 3-2 edge in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks, but things got lopsided in the second half despite the Knights getting just one more goal. The Golden Knights controlled play frequently in the second half with the ball in the Utica defensive end and rarely passing the center line. Numerous shots were rifled high and wide of Wagner, but Clarkson came through with an insurance goal midway through the half. After getting a pass from near midfield, sophomore Rachel Strijek had plenty of time on the right wing to settle the ball, sending a pass into the penalty area. From there, sophomore Megan Murphy gathered the ball in and found Careccia eight yards away and the third classmate finished off the play with a groundball to the opposite post at 62:52.

Though the Knights would challenge for more goals later in the game, nothing came of the chances, but Clarkson finished with a 14-3 margin in shots and an 8-0 lead in corner kick chances. Sophomore goalkeeper Elyse Green tallied one save in the second half for the shutout, while Wagner finished the game with four stops.
