CU baseball earns split with #4 Oswego

In the home opener, the Clarkson University Baseball team went toe to toe with fourth-ranked Oswego State on Tuesday afternoon, earning a split of a twin bill.

Clarkson has an 11-13 record while Oswego is 24-4. Clarkson's win in the opening game snapped a 15 game winning streak for the Lakers and gave Clarkson a seven game winning streak.

In the first game of the day, put together two big innings to carry the Golden Knights to a 12-7 victory. Oswego took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Clarkson immediately answered when Chris Miller singled home Will Coleman in its half of the inning. Oswego scored three runs in the top of the third and were looking for more, but on a two run double hit by John Barnes, Dom Pirro's throw from center field was cut off by Anthony Padrazo who gunned down Barnes as he tried to stretch his hit into a triple.

Clarkson again wasted little time answering with a big rally in the third. Greg Jasek worked a one-out walk and then scored all the way from first on a double by Miller. Brad Pearson followed Miller with a triple and then Dom Pirro scored Pearson on a single. Connor Martin was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. A single by Paddy Defino seemed like it would load the bases, but heads-up base-running by Pirro saw him score when Oswego's right fielder bobbled the ball. After a pitching change, Ben Knauf walked to load the bases with

Padrazo following with a walk to score a run. Will Coleman knocked in the final run of the inning on a fielder's choice.

Oswego threatened to tie the game in the top of the fifth, with the Lakers scoring two runs and loading the bases with just one out. The next batter though grounded to Padrazo who flipped to Coleman with Coleman throwing to first to complete an inning-ending double play. In Clarkson's half of the fifth, the Green and Gold broke the game open. Martin, Defino, and Knauf all reached base to open the inning and then another Padrazo walk scored a run. Coleman followed with an RBI free pass and then Jasek singled to center field to bring home Knauf and Padrazo. Miller added one more run when his groundout scored Coleman.

Oswego added one more run in the top of the seventh, but that was it for the Lakers as their winning streak came to an end. Mike Bubniak picked up the win for Clarkson, the first of his collegiate career. He threw five innings, allowing six runs, five of them earned, on eight hits and one walk. Ryan Riley pitched the final two innings and allowed one run on two hits.

The second game started much like the first did, with Oswego scoring one run in the top of the first and Clarkson answering in its half. Clarkson's runs came from an RBI double by Jasek that scored Coleman, and a walk for Martin that brought home Jasek.

That was all the runs Clarkson could muster though and Oswego regained the lead for good in the top half of the second with two runs. The Lakers gained breathing room in the third with another run and then blew the game open in the fifth with three more runs, capped by a two run triple by Mike Dellicarri. One final run in the top of the seventh made the final margin 8-2 in favor of Oswego.

Rory Corcoran took the loss in his second start of the year, allowing seven runs on 11 hits in four and one third innings. Andrew Smith threw the final two and two thirds innings, giving up one run on four hits.

Clarkson will be right back at it tomorrow when the Golden Knights travel to Canton for a 4:00 pm game.
