CU Alpine team races to solid spots over weekend at West Mountain

Queensbury, NY - Junior Hayes Lowth stumbled in the giant slalom on Saturday, but he rallied for a first-place finish in the slalom on Sunday as the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team enjoyed a solid weekend at West Mountain.

The Golden Knights' men posted a fourth-place finish on Saturday in the giant slalom and then took first in the slalom on Sunday, while the Clarkson women were better on Saturday, taking third in the giant slalom before finishing sixth in the slalom on Sunday.

On Saturday, Clarkson's men had two of its top skiers not finish their seconds runs (Hayes Lowth and Asa Frankowski), but those that were able to maintain their balance on both runs performed well. Austin Florian came in ninth among 71 skiers with a time of 1:44.05, just 2.40 seconds off the pace of the day's top performer, while sophomore Greg Murray and freshman Ryan Riley finished back-to-back in 13th and 14th, respectively. Senior Ian Williams rounded out the scoring for the Knights by coming in 22nd place overall, 1.85 seconds behind Florian's time. Christian Avery (27th), Colden Mrak (29th) and Tyler Brown (33rd) also finished in the top half of the field, while Eli Greenwald (45th) was just short of that mark.

Sunday was better for the Golden Knights' men as Lowth and Frankowski finished as the top two skiers for the Green and Gold after being unable to finish the course on Saturday. Lowth was dominant, producing the best time in each of his two runs and combining for a 1:38.13 time, 0.98 seconds faster than anyone else in the field. Frankowski began a run of three straight Clarkson skiers when he came in eighth place in 1:40.72 as he was followed by Murray (9th, 1:40.87) and Florian (10th, 1:41.21), finishing off the scoring for Clarkson and giving the Knights a 3-minute, 12 second win. If Clarkson had put in a second team the Knights would have scored high as well, as Ryan Riley (14th, 1:42.12), Chrisian Avery (16th, 1:42.39), Colden Mrak (20th, 1:42.87) and Ian Williams (27th, 1:47.26) also produced solid times. Eli Greenwald (31st, 1:51.63) also finished in the top half of the field, while Tyler Brown (46th) was also nearly in the first portion of performers.

Unlike the men, Clarkson's women were better on the first day overall, especially at the top, than on day two. Junior Casey Abraham was 2.74 seconds off the pace as she took 13th out of 84 skiers with a time of 1:49.41, and she was followed closely by classmate Kara Van Herwarde in 14th (1:49.66). Seniors Taylor Manderson and Kelly Rowland finished off the scoring for the Knights as the duo took 19th and 22nd, respectively. Senior Ashley Yoviene wasn't much further behind in 28th in 1:52.45. Sonja Gagen (40th), Tara Seigle (51st), Libby McCusker (53rd) and Caroline Bonin (75th) all were able to finish both of their runs. On Sunday, Van Herwarde had the best finish of the weekend for the women by taking eighth among 74 slalom skiers in 1:51.84, but she was the lone Clarkson skier in the top 20. Casey Abraham (21st, 1:56.54), Libby McCusker (25th, 1:58.62) and Kelly Rowland (27th, 2:00.34) rounded out the Clarkson top four. Ashley Yoviene (28th), Taylor Manderson (29th), Tara Seigle (31st) and Sonja Gagen (39th) were also just outside of the scoring for Clarkson.
