St. Lawrence University's men's outdoor track and field team had two of the meet's stars, but not quite enough depth as it finished third in the 2015 Liberty League Outdoor Track and Field Championships at RPI on Saturday.

The Saints, thin in some events to start with, were without two potential scorers in the jumps as Al Kabia had a conflict for an internship interview and Jamal Samaroo missed the meet with an injury. While SLU came through with a number of strong performances, they were not enough to overcome RPI and RIT as the Engineers won the meet with 201 points, the Tigers were second with 131 and the Saints third with 115. Vassar had 91, Bard 26 and Union 12 to complete the six-team field.

Saint junior Nick Crawford was named the meet's outstanding field performer while Gordon White (right) was tabbed as the Rookie of the Meet after a big jump 7956in the long jump.

Crawford won the 400 hurdles in 54.93 seconds and the joined Travis Hamre, Harrison Stivers, and Dan Viscardi in a dramatic 4x400 relay win to end the meet. Hamre and Stivers kept the Saints in the thick of it through the first two legs, Viscardi moved the Saints toward the front and Crawford took the lead early in the anchor leg and then held off RPI's Sam Waddell and Vassar's Carl Estrada down the stretch to give the Saints the win in 3:25.61.

White, one of two rookie winners for the Saints in the meet, had the biggest mark of the day in terms of the national rankings, leaping 7.04 meters on his final jump of the competition to win the long jump. The jump is the 12th best in the nation thus far this season.

Steeplechaser Jack Martin was the other Saint rookie champion, winning in 9:52.83 and leading the Saints to 19 points in that event. Ben Fishbein finished third, Zane Belden was fifth and Caleb Kessler was sixth.

Sophomore Thomas Caulfield was the other Saint champion as he followed up his indoor title in the 5,000 meters with the same championship outdoors, running 15:21.79 with senior Trevor Bibb a close second.

Scott Kasson added third place finishes in both the shot put and discus with Shawn Lillie fourth in the shot. Lillie also scored in the 110 hurdles with a fourth place finish and was fifth in the long jump. J.T. Martel finished third in the javelin with Connor Heaney fifth.

Scott Smolensky was fourth, Bibb fifth and Caulfield sixth in the 1500, Smolensky was fifth in the 800, Viscardi was fourth and Martell fifth in the 400 hurdles and Hamre was fourth in the 200 for other top performances on the track for the Saints.

SLU will send individual entries to the Penn Relays next weekend.
