Cortland women's tennis sweep carries Saints into final weekend
In its final midweek contest of the season, the St. Lawrence women's tennis team downed visiting Cortland, 9-0, in the Newell Field House Thursday afternoon.
The Saints opened up a 4-0 lead following doubles play, as the Red Dragons' first pairing was forced to retire with an injury to Dilara Kumbul after the set's opening point. As Cortland only traveled with six players, Morgan McNeal won her scheduled singles match against Kumbul by default. The Saints needed only one singles victory to clinch, but swept the remaining five spots en route to their fourth consecutive match win.
Elkie Vandenbeemt led the team in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1; the first straight-set shutout win for the junior this season. Anna Young posted a 6-0, 6-0 win of her own at No. 4, downing Cortland's Katie Fineman.
Meanwhile, Georgia Comber defeated Janette O'Keefe at No. 3 6-0, 6-1; Samantha Miller handled Michelle Coffey 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 and Bridget Fleming rounded out the Saints sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6.
