POTSDAM, N.Y.--SUNY Cortland (3-6-1, 2-1-1 SUNYAC) scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (4-5-1, 0-3) on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Dragons got on the board just 3:50 into the contest. Cortland sophomore defender Rachel Parker (Marathon, N.Y./Marathon) took control of the ball at the top of the box and lofted it over Potsdam sophomore goalie Emily Lepage (Brushton, N.Y./Brushton-Moira) for a 1-0 lead. Cortland held the edge in play the rest of the half, but the Bears kept the Red Dragons off the board through the break. Lepage had six saves in the opening 45 minutes.
After some back-and-forth play early in the final period, the Cortland doubled its advantage. At 56:52, senior midfielder Kaitlyn Cook (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) sent a cross into the box and junior forward Abby Williams (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) headed it home to make it 2-0. The play evened after the goal, but neither team was able find the back of the net for the rest of the contest.
Lapage closed the contest with eight saves and Red Dragon sophomore goalie Renee Walker (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) got the win with four stops.
The Bears look to bounce back next Friday when they head to SUNY Oneonta for a 4 p.m. match.
