Two goals in the second half of the third period helped Cornell double up the St. Lawrence women's hockey team, 4-2, in the Saints first semester finale on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena. With the win, Cornell improves to 6-6-1 overall and 5-2-0 in conference play, while the Saints drop to 8-6-2 and 5-3-1 against ECAC opponents.

"As always, a very entertaining game when we play Cornell," Head Coach Chris Wells said. "Both teams gave everything they had and it made for a great up-and-down game."

St. Lawrence held the overall edge in shots, 31-25, including 12 in the third period, but Big Red sophomore goaltender Paula Voorheis came up big for the visitors in the closing minutes.

"We have some fantastic chances to go up and tie it in the third and Voorheis stopped some sure goals on a half dozen of our shots down the stretch," Wells added.

The Saints carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission after sophomore Brooke Webster got the Saints on the board midway through the opening frame with her eleventh goal of the season. Linemate Jacqueline Wand broke the Saints out of defensive zone with a pass to first-year Kennedy Marchment who carried along the right wall before sending a pass through the skates of a Cornell defender to Webster who was streaking down the left wing. In behind the defense, Webster deked to wait out Big Red netminder Paula Voorheis before finishing on her backhand to give St. Lawrence a 1-0 lead.

Cornell erased the deficit with a pair of goals in the second period. The first, a power-play tally by Brianna Veerman, came just 13 seconds after Jenna Marks was whistled for holding. St. Lawrence goaltender Carmen MacDonald made a save on Veerman from in close, but the rebound kicked back onto the Big Red forward's stick and she lifted the puck over MacDonald's shoulder to tie the game at 1-1.

The second Cornell goal was scored by Kaitlin Doering, who collected the rebound from a Hanna Bunton shot at the bottom of the right circle and snapped a one-timer behind MacDonald to give the Big Red its first lead of the day, as the team's entered the second intermission with Cornell in front 2-1.

St. Lawrence junior forward Kailee Heidersach pulled the Saints even at 2-2 with a one-time shot from the left faceoff dot that beat the six-foot Cornell netminder high for her fifth of the year at the 7:26 mark of the third. Jenna Marks and Kayla Raniwsky picked up assists on the play.

Just over six minutes later, the Big Red's top line of Jillian Saulnier, Emily Fulton and Brianne Jenner teamed up for the eventual game-winning goal on an odd-man rush. Fulton dished to Saulnier as she crashed the net for the finish. Fulton added an insurance tally at the 16:54 mark to push the Big Red lead to 4-2.

Voorheis finished with 29 saves for the Big Red, while MacDonald made 21 stops for the Saints.

St. Lawrence will open the second semester with a game against the University of Minnesota at Mankato in Minnesota on January 3.
