The St. Lawrence University women's rowing team squared off with Hamilton College in the annual Newell Cup race on Saturday, April 19 in Rome, NY. The Continentals earned the win in the varsity 8+ to win the cup on the 2,000m course.
The Saints have had limited time on the water due to the difficult weather conditions. The team finished the varsity race in 7:21.81 with a 5-10 mph tailwind, but behind the Continentals' time of 7:05.37. The varsity 8+ boat was stroked by senior captain Jenette Kloss and also included Gabby Schreffler, Karen Blakelock, Heidi Weiss, Ellie Jones, Mikayla Thomas, Daniela Stokes, Hannah Durant and coxswain Yuki McQueeney.
St. Lawrence's novice 8+ had an impressive row against Hamilton's JV and 3V boats, finishing in second place with a time of 7:28.75. The young squad fell off Hamilton's JV boat by 11 seconds, but had an open water win over the Continentals' 3V by nearly 20 seconds. Amy Yao coxed the Saints' second crew, which also included Kailash Heron, Laura Greshin, Emma Morgan, Sarah Evarts, Annie Williams, captain Abbie McIvor, Keckeley Habel and Jen Lifsitz.
Saturday's races were only the second events of the spring for St. Lawrence, which enters the championship portion of its schedule this weekend. The Saints will race at the 2014 Liberty League Championships in Saratoga Springs on Sunday, April 27.
