Conor Healey leads St. Lawrence University men’s lacrosse past Utica

Junior Conor Healey scored three goals and handed out six assists for his second consecutive nine-point game leading the St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a convincing 12-4 victory over Utica College Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game played at SUNY Potsdam.

Healey entered the season with his career-high for points in a game at nine. He has matched that number in each of the first two games of the season scoring five goals and four assists in the opener against Franklin & Marshall and adding his three goals and six assists effort in the win over Utica.

The Saints (2-0), listed among the teams in the also receiving votes section of the latest national poll, scored the first seven goals of the game with Healey accounting for two goals and three assists in the run that lasted into the second quarter.

Jamie Kuppel, Jordan Dow, Jon Fairbanks, Jeremy Vautour and Jamie DeNicola all added single goals to get the Saints off to a great start.

Healey's second goal was a man-down effort and gave the Saints a 7-0 lead over the Pioneers (0-1) near the end of the second quarter as the teams went into the halftime intermission with the 7-0 score.

In the third quarter, Charlie Duprey and Dow scored in a span of less than a minute midway through the period with Healey setting up both goals and giving St. Lawrence a 9-1 advantage.

Utica scored its second goal of the game a minute later but the Saints answered with another Dow from Healey goal and just before the end of the quarter, Healey's third goal of the game with an assist from Steve Peterson.

Utica scored twice in the fourth quarter before DeNicola scored his second of the game to wrap up the win. Fairbanks had an assist on the play for his second of the contest.

Defensively, the Saints were dominant forcing 21 turnovers and stopping five of the 21 clear attempts by the Pioneers. Ryan Fisher made several big saves and finished the day with 10 saves playing the first three quarters and picking up his second win of the season. Pat Sullivan and Matty Corbelle combined to make four saves in the fourth quarter.

Cam Mullins and Jack Roberts caused three turnovers each and Caleb Kane added two caused turnovers to lead the defensive effort. Roberts Kane and Sam Sweeney had three ground balls each.

St. Lawrence will play another neutral site game Wednesday with a 4 pm game against Castleton State at SUNY Plattsburgh.
